Celebrating umunthu champions fighting for the health rights of LGBTI community

It is not always easy to stand up for our rights and it becomes even harder when you are a minority group. Living in a community which has not yet fully accepted the LGBTI community makes it difficult for them to easily access health care services. This is why we commend the work which our Chikwawa Umunthu Champions are doing speaking up for and making sure that members of the LGBTI community in their district have access to health services.

Mr. Limited, who is our champion for Chikwawa –Ngabu was approached by eight LGBTI community members who explained to him the challenge which they had in accessing condoms at their local hospital;

“There are no condoms at the rural hospital and the surrounding local clinics. This is affecting us a lot because it puts us at an even higher risk of contracting Sexually Transmitted Infections including HIV/AIDS,” Explained one of the members.

Listening to this challenge, Mr. Limited took the initiative to reach out to a fellow champion, Mr. Khumzy who is a champion for Chikwawa-Central who also works as a clinician at the district hospital. Mr. Khumzy spoke with the district hospital about the challenge and sought their help so that they can share condoms with the Ngabu rural hospital.

After speaking with the district hospital, Mr. Khumzy was able to make a provision of condoms which Mr. Limited collected and placed in the local health facilities in Ngabu.

We know that many LGBTI community members find it hard to air out their challenges in terms of health access, but we are happy that our champions have been able to create a trust-based relationship with them. We also applaud the collaboration between Mr. Limited and Mr. Khumzy which has made it possible for the LGBTI community in Ngabu (and other community members) to find easy access to condoms. Mr. Limited said that they are also able to access PrEp; which puts them at a lower risk of contracting HIV. As we commemorate the Human Rights Day today, it is imperative to remember that health is a fundamental human right and that every person has the right to be healthy and access quality healthcare despite their background.
