Taking the SGDs to the People

Ensuring that SDGs are attained is not only the responsibility of people in the offices but the community as well. A majority of people in this nation are not familiar with the goals which makes it hard to holistically attain them. Our Gender Justice Lead, Sharon Kalima Nkhwazi, is of the view that Participatory arts such as dance, songs, drama, and TfD can play a crucial role in ensuring that the SDGs are made familiar to each and everyone including children.

“We have to make sure that when communicating about the SDGs, we have to make them simple, attractive, and easy to understand and change. This will simplify adoption and implementation of the same,” elaborated Nkhwazi.

In concurrence with Nkhwazi, a member of the audience questioned why the nation does not invest in the creative industry although the sector has shown undeniable potential that could have assisted the nation in achieving its development aspirations. He further said that the moment people understand the SDGs in a simpler and more creative manner, they will be empowered to hold the relevant people accountable. Apart from that, communities will be able to know their role in making sure that the goals as achieved.

Nkhwazi made this contribution during the National Development Conference which was organized by the National Planning Commission of Malawi and held on the 2nd and 3rd of February 2023. She was one of the panelists in a discussion about the SGDs, ‘Leaving no one behind’.
